About 120 customers were without water service Wednesday evening as the county’s Department of Water Supply repaired a broken pipe on Puainako Street in Hilo.

The water pipe broke at about 10:30 a.m. outside Waiakea Intermediate School, said Kanani Aton, department spokeswoman.

Crews responding to the break waited to shut off the water and begin repairs until school was dismissed for the day.

The pipe was expected to be fixed later in the day.

Lloyd Matsunami, Waiakea Intermediate School principle, said only after-school programs were impacted, and parents were requested to pick up students as early as possible.

The after-school programs were relocated to the Waiakea Elementary School.

The road was reduced to one lane near the break.
